Motherhood: A Spectrum of Emotions
As a mum to a toddler, one often craves for some time alone. It’s so necessary for maintaining one’s mental, emotional and spiritual health. We often feel that our child takes us to the brink of insanity, yet we do not accomplish anything “meaningful” the entire day.
However, we don’t realize that quite often, motherhood gives us the most meaningful experiences that actually contribute to our mental and emotional health.
Someone might argue that I should enroll my daughter in daycare so that I can do something more “productive” with my time, while she develops her social skills by being with her age mates. It’s great if that works for someone! But for me, spending thirty minutes trying to feed my daughter a single bowl of oatmeal myself is more fulfilling than a “productive” activity. It’s because we talk and sing together at meals, exchange smiles, learn different spiritual lessons from each other, console each other (consciously or unconsciously), be silly together, and thank Allah SWT for the food on the table. That’s an exchange of a lot of positive energy.
Having said that, there are still days when I don’t have a single ounce of energy left to even change a diaper, and my biggest wish is for someone to babysit my child. That’s motherhood – a spectrum of emotions!
